The Gosainkunda Trek takes you to the one of the holiest lakes in Asia for Hindus to the place where Lord Shiva stabbed his trident into the ground to create the wild waters of the Trisuli River. Thousands of Hindu Pilgrims from Nepal, India and other countries visit Gosainkunda to pay their homage to the holy Lake every year. The trek provides some magnificent views of the great Himalayas. The route we take is connected from Kathmandu to Dhunche and from Dhunche the trekking begins for a total of 18 days going along the ridge, through rhododendron and juniper forests up to Gosainkunda Lake and back to Kathmandu.A beautiful journey less troden and a bit of a secret gem. You are amongst some wonderfully colourful people with awe inspiring vistas of the highest mountains in the world.

When you arrive at Kathmandu airport, you will be welcomed by the representative of our company who will take the hotel. You will be served welcome dinner in the evening.O/N at Hotel

After breakfast, we head to Sundarijal which is 1 hour drive from Kathmandu. Our trekking starts from here. The trial follows breathtaking dense forests with trees like oak, pine, rhododendron and others. The large pipe which can be seen along supplies water to Kathmandu. On your way, you will be welcomed by the views of Annapurna in the west, Ganesh Himal in the West and Numbur in the East. The trek of day 2 ends on reaching Chisapani where we stay overnight in a tea house. Chisapani is a very beautiful place from where the Himalayan ranges Dorgelakpa and Langtang can be seen.

After taking breakfast at Chisapani, we walk for 1 and half hours to reach Pati Bhanjyang which is a large village inhabited by the people of Tamang community. Our trial the reaches to the height of 2470 m and then we descend to reach Gul Bhanjyang which is also a Tamang village. Then, we hike to reach the altitude of 2620 m and continue our journey to travel down to Khutumsang. On reaching there, we will witness the splendid views of Himalayan ranges. We spend the night in a tea house.

From Khutumsang, the trail ascends through forest with splendid views across to Numbur, Jugal Himal and many other snowcapped peaks, before we arrive a ridge form where a short descend brings us to Mangan Kharka at an altitude 3285 m. Then, the trail gradually gains altitude as we pass through the pine and rhododendron forest enjoying the good views down into the Helambu valley and across to Jugal Himal and Numbur. Finally reach at Tharepati where we spend the night.

From Tharepati, the trail descends to a stream and ascends along the ridge, through rhododendron and juniper forests, to Ghopte at 3359m. From here, we again ascend to Phedi. This is such a nice trek which offers unimaginable view of Laurebina pass. We stay overnight at the tea house.

The trail ascends all the way to Laurebina pass at 4610m, pass four small lakes and descends through rugged trials and we finally reach Gosaikunda. There are three sacred lakes in Gosainkunda- Saraswati Kunda, Bharavi Kunda and Gosaikunda. This third lake is particularly sacred and is a place of pilgrimage in summer. According to the legend, this lake was created by Lord Shiva himself when he pierced a glacier with his trident to obtain water to quench his thirst after he drank the poison which was a by-product while churning the ocean by “Suras” and “Asuras” for ambrosia. Overnight stay at a tea house.

From the lake- Saraswati Kunda, the trail ascends to a ridge. There are good views across Langtang valley to Langtang Lirung. To the west are dramatic views of Himalchuli, Ganesh Himal and Manaslu. From this ridge, we descend to Sing Gompa via Laurebina. There is a small monastery and a cheese factory in Sing Gompa. Stay over night at a tea house.

Today after breakfast, we trek down all the way to Dhunche through the forest of oaks, firs and rhododendrons. Dhunche is district head quarter of Rasuwa. Stay overnight at a tea house.

On our first ever visit to Nepal we went on trekking to Gosaikunda region. We chose Nepal social treks because they offered a route starting from Kathmandu valley and not from Dhunche as this aids height acclimatization. Booking and planning was easy and Basu was very responsive by email. Our local trekking guide Kamal is very experienced. He always cared for our wellbeing and adapted the trekking itinerary according to our needs. For example we took an additional day before crossing Laurebina pass, which helped a lot in getting adapted to the altitude. He even carried one of our backpacks for a while as we were very exhausted arriving at Gosaikuda lake. All in all we very much recommend this trek and especially our guide Kamal.
