Overview
Bokta Peak (6143 meters) is a growing destination for an easy peak climbing experience. It lies in the Taplejung district of the Eastern part of Nepal. Bokta peak stands very close to Mount Kanchenjunga (8586 meters) – the third highest mountain peak in the world.
Bokta Peak is one of the 400 peaks that are officially open for mountaineering thrill in Nepal. This peak is open for climbing under Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) from 2002 onwards. This peak is relatively easy as compared to others in this region. However, the climb does demand some climbing skills, strength, stamina, and endurance for the successful summit.
The panoramic view of Mount Kanchenjunga (8586 meters), Mt. Kumbhakarna (7710 meters), Dhormo Peak (6143 meters), Nupchu Peak (6690 meters), and several other surrounding peaks will delight your heart for the lifetime. This adventure will take you through varying topography, vegetation, ecosystem, culture, and lifestyle. Bokta Peak climbing will be one of the best experiences of your life.
You will board a flight from Kathmandu to Suketar. It is the starting point of your trek. You will take the main trail that leads to many other trekking destinations in the Kanchenjunga region. Follow through the terraced farmlands of Mitlung and descent up to Chiruwa. From here, you will hike up to Chirwa and then to Sekathum after registration at the ranger office. Following the Tamur river, continue on the rugged trail through Cyapla and Ghunsa.
A day of acclimatization and rest at Ghunsa will restore your energy. Moving along the East bank of the river, you will come to Khambachen. You will trek back to Ghunsa after reaching Pangpema. From here, you will climb to Tseram following the Sele La Pass Base Camp. Passing through the alpine meadows and traversing moraines of Yalung Glacier, you will reach Ramche. You will acclimatize here for a day before hitting the trail up to Bokta Peak High Camp.
You will summit Bokta Peak the following day, starting early before sunrise. Stand tall and enjoy the iconic sight of surrounding peaks such as Mt. Kanchenjunga, Mt. Kumbharkarna, Dhormo Peak, and Nupchu Peak while the clouds rest beneath you.
After a successful summit, you will head down to Bokta Peak Base Camp. Walking through the beautiful rhododendron forests, you will reach Torontang. Following the Simbuwa river, you will come to a beautiful village in Telok with Limbu and Gurung inhabitants. Finally, you will reach Suketar passing through Lali Kharka. You will board a domestic flight back to Kathmandu from Suketar. On the 30th day of your visit, you will board a plane back to your home country.
The best season for Bokta Peak Climbing is during Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November). During these two seasons, the weather remains clear most of the days and increases the chance of getting the best views of surrounding peaks.
Short Introduction of Bokta Peak Climbing
Bokta Peak is a less explored trekking destination in the Eastern part of Nepal. This peak is located in the Taplejung district and is a part of the Kanchenjunga region. The mountain stands at 6143 meters, among other peaks of the Kanchenjunga range. Bokta Peak was first summitted in 2002. This peak has gained popularity among adventure seekers ever since.
You can get a stunning view of the third-highest mountain in the world – Mount Kanchenjunga (8586 meters). Apart from Mt. Kanchenjunga, you will also witness many other peaks of the region, such as Mt. Kumbhakarna (7710 meters), Dhormo Peak (6850 meters), Nupchu Peak (6690 meters), and several other surrounding peaks.
Is Bokta Peak Climb Right For You?
- The weather conditions in the mountain region can be unpredictable. They can affect the itinerary in terms of the number of days. Customer safety is our top priority, and thus, the Bokta peak climbing package may lengthen in case of harsh weather. So make sure you plan the time of the year carefully. The scenery and conditions may vary depending on the season you choose to go on this expedition.
- For about a week, you will have to walk continuously for 5 to 6 hours per day, excluding the climb itself. So it is a must that you prepare yourself physically and mentally for the challenge. Engage in exercises to increase your stamina and strength before you come to Nepal for your climb. Also, it will be advantageous if you engage yourself in climbing exercises prior to this expedition.
- Bokta Peak rests at 6143m/20,154ft. This climb is technically easy but will challenge your stamina, endurance, and strength. The adventure may be particularly challenging for those with low fitness levels or no previous summiting experience. So make sure to improve your stamina and strength.
- This journey includes around two weeks overnight stays over 3000 meters. The thinning air pressure may increase the risk of developing AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness). You may experience shortness of breath and mild headaches during your stay and climb. Your guide will make sure to lead you at your natural pace. Walk slowly to let your body adjust to the thinning air.
- Our guides and Sherpas are well trained and experienced in handling emergencies. They also carry first aid, including some emergency medicines, to help you in the time of difficulty. In extreme cases where you need emergency evacuation from any spot of the trail, we will rescue you via helicopter.
- We recommend that you keep yourself active and fit to decrease the risk of fatality. Make sure that you are physically fit and mentally prepared to make the climb before booking the trip. If you are unsure about your conditions, you should seek medical advice.

Important Trip Notes
- It is a must that the expedition is accompanied by a climbing guide registered with the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA).
- This trip starts early in Kathmandu, and you have two days to rest in the capital. As a result, you will get enough time for the briefing about the expedition.
- You need to either filter, boil, or purify the water with iodine tablets if you fill your bottles with water from the taps. Diarrhea is quite common and mainly caused due to impure water. You must be cautious all the time.
- The royalty fee to summit Bokta Peak is as follows:
- Spring ( March, April, May) = USD 250
- Autumn (September, October, November) = USD 125
- Winter (December, January, February) = USD 70
- Summer (June, July, August) = USD 70

- You may also need to carry some passport-size photographs to carry out the paperwork for your expedition permit.
