Overview

If you are looking for a short alpine adventure, the Chulu West Peak (6419 meters) can be your perfect destination. Chulu West Peak is one of the majestic peaks of the Himalayas. Located in the Annapurna region, Chulu West Peak is one of the popular trails of Nepal.

Chulu West is a part of the Damodar Himal range of Manang located in western Nepal. This peak stands South from Chako Peak (6687 meters). Towards the North-South lies the Nar, Phu, and Hunglung Khola. Chulu West Peak climb offers an iconic view of the bold Mt Annapurna (8,091m), Mt. Dhaulagiri (8167 m), and the 360 degrees panorama of the Annapurna Range. Considered as one of the best peaks in the Annapurna region, the trail to Chulu West will lead you through a range of landforms, diverse cultures, and ethnicity of Nepal.

The Chulu West Peak climb starts at Dharapani. From here, you will follow the trekking route that leads to many other famous destinations in the Annapurna sanctuary. The path follows the Marsyangdi river valley. You will experience varying landscapes and Gurung cultures along the way. Walk along the green meadows that lead up to a barren topography.

You will see the red forest of rhododendron up to the upper valley. Continuing past the Pisang, you will reach Manang. Manang is the best acclimatization spot for climbers headed towards Annapurna Range. From here you will climb up to Chulu West Base Camp after passing Letdar. The main trail will lead you up to High Camp followed by Camp II on the next day. Finally, a day more of ascending, and you will stand tall at the height of 6419 meters. Getting surrounded by the iconic peaks of the Himalayas feels like a sight of heaven on Earth.

After a successful summit, descend to Camp I and then to Phedi. The following day you will take a pilgrimage visit to Muktinath. You will cross Thorung La Pass at 5416 meters on your way to Muktinath. Finally, trek to Jomson where you will catch a flight to Pokhara. After a day off, you will drive back to Kathmandu and board a flight back home on the 18th day of your journey.

The best season for Chulu West Peak Climbing is during Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November). During these two seasons, the weather remains clear and increases the chances of the best view of the mountain ranges. Moreover, the days are longer so that you get enough time to reach the destination each day.

Is The Chulu West Peak Climb Right For You?

  • The weather in the mountains can be unpredictable and can affect the itinerary in terms of the number of days. Customer safety is our top priority, and thus, the package may lengthen in case of harsh weather conditions during the climb. So make sure you plan the time of the year carefully. The scenery and conditions may vary depending on the season you choose to pursue the climb.
  • For about a week, you will have to walk continuously for 5 to 7 hours per day, excluding the climb itself. So it is better that you prepare yourself physically and mentally for the challenge. Do some exercises to increase your stamina and strength before you come to Nepal for your climb. Also, it will be a plus point if you engage yourself in climbing exercises prior to this expedition.
  • Chulu West rests at a height of 6419 meters/21,060 feet. This climb is technically straightforward yet challenging.
  • It will test your stamina, endurance, and strength. The adventure may be particularly difficult for those with low fitness levels or no previous summiting experience. So keep in check that your body can meet the fitness level required for the climb.
  • This journey includes around nine overnight stays over 3000 meters. The thinning air pressure may increase the risk of developing AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness). You may encounter shortness of breath and mild headaches during your stay or climb. Your guide will make sure to lead you according to your natural pace. Walk slowly to let your body adjust to the thinning air.
  • Our guides and Sherpas are well trained and experienced in handling emergencies. They also carry first aid, including some emergency medicines, to help you in the time of difficulty. In extreme cases where you need emergency evacuation from any spot, we will rescue you via helicopter.
  • We recommend that you keep yourself active and fit to decrease the risk of fatality. Make sure that you are physically and physiologically capable of taking the climb before booking the trip. If you are unsure about your conditions, you should seek medical advice.

Safety and Precautions

When you are traveling to a higher altitude, the risk of altitude sickness increases, but we don’t want our customers to halt or cancel the summit due to the unwanted difficulties. So we have mentioned few tips that would help you prevent and deal with altitude sickness:

Symptoms of Altitude Sickness

  • Difficulty in breathing,
  • Dizziness (light-headedness),
  • Fatigue,
  • Headache,
  • Loss of appetite,
  • Nausea and vomiting,
  • Rapid pulse.

Preventing Altitude Sickness

  • Avoid direct summit to the high altitudes. Give your body time to adapt to the changing altitude, air pressure, and environment. Don’t expose your body to the harsh environment directly.
  • Take several days to hike in high altitude.
  • Take a rest at every 600 to 800 meters as you climb up.
  • Keep your body hydrated by drinking enough water.
  • Strictly avoid drinking alcohol and smoking.

Treating Altitude Sickness

In case you start experiencing any symptom of altitude sickness, follow the guidelines below:

  • Immediately stop the climb and rest where you are at the moment where you start experiencing the symptoms of altitude sickness
  • In case of headache, take ibuprofen aspirin.
  • If you feel sick, take antihistamines like trimeprazine or promethazine
  • Garlic and Sichuan pepper work great to prevent and treat altitude sickness

Medication

  • Acetazolamide prevents and treats altitude sickness. It should be taken 24 to 48 hours before you start your climb,
  • Ibuprofen and aspirin for headaches,
  • Promethazine for nausea and vomiting.

Day To Day Detailed Itinerary

Our representative from Nepal Social Trek will receive you and your group at the Tribhuvan International Airport (Kathmandu) upon your arrival. After paying the visa fee at the airport, you will then move to your hotel via the tourist bus or jeep. There you will receive a warm welcome from our staff along with a welcome snack. You can take rest for the day. You will shortly receive a briefing about your daily activities throughout your trip. You can either take the day off or roam around the capital city.

Dinner
Hotel - 3 Stars

You will get up early in the morning, have breakfast, and get on a private jeep from your hotel to Beshisahar. You will see many green hills and vegetation as soon as you exit the town. The drive will take around 6 hours. Further, you will continue the drive along the canal of the outskirts and descend to a narrow path of Pam Khola. After passing the stream, you will reach Denauti village. Here, you will gain your first experience of an authentic Nepali village. You will continue along the bank of Marshyangdi Khola and through the paddy fields and subtropical forests. Finally, you will reach Dharapani where you will be spending the night.

You will start at the first light so that the scorching sun does not add to your problem on your ascend. You will walk down the trail through the gorgeous Marsyangdi valley. After crossing the valley, you will get your first view of the mystical Manaslu and Annapurna mountain range. You will encounter multiple cascading waterfalls along your way.

The beautiful aura of nature and the mountain scenery will keep you energized to continue on your path. The trail now continues uphill as you pass the Ngadi village. pass through the rice fields as soon as you leave the Bahundanda. After crossing the green rice field, you will come across beautiful streams and small waterfalls. The path rises and traverses the hillside. From where you stand, you will see the Marsyangdi river flowing below. Soon you will reach the village of Hani Gaon.

Take a short break here. After having some food, you will continue ahead. The Marshyangdi valley forms a steep V-shape trail as you move forward. Follow the winding mountainous path through Syange till you reach Tal.

You will now descend from Tal until you reach a river. Continue your walk, passing the charmingly lush green forest. The path begins to ascend from here onwards.  You will encounter a sharp-edged cliff facing a riverbank. Take a moment to capture the beauty from up here.

You will start to notice variations in the settlements and flora as you continue towards the higher altitude. The influence of the Tibetan lifestyle is dominant in higher regions. The sight of mountain peaks continues to accompany you along the way.  The trail is rugged and uneven, so be careful when you take your steps. You will reach Chame in about 7 hours.

Special Information

We will take periodic small breaks along the way. Use your hiking poles, carry water bottles, and, most importantly, maintain your natural pace. It will help you move forward with ease.

The path above Sattale follows a grassy riverbank. On a further climb, the trail becomes narrow and more difficult. Follow your guide and do as you are instructed. If you have any problem with your hike, do not hesitate to tell your guide.

A beautiful small village at the bank of Marshyangdi River awaits you. Get up early, have some breakfast, and quickly get back on the trail. Morning is the best time to start the hike as the temperature is soothing, and your energy is fully revived after a good night’s sleep. The trail is pretty much similar to any other day with rocky topography and uneven texture.

Above 3000 meters, you will begin to notice the change in vegetation numbers. Floral life starts to become scarce at higher levels. You will come across a drier terrain that gives you a desert-like vibe. Steady your pace as you will soon reach a lovely coniferous forest. After that, you will see small settlements of mountain people till you finally reach Pisang. You will spend the night in a teahouse or a camp.

Follow down the original route that leads up to Manang. Manang is a famous hub of climbers for acclimatization. To reach Manang, you will pass through many agricultural fields along the way. You will pay a visit to the Bryaga Monastery. Here, you will get introduced to the daily lives of local monks. This monastery is renowned for the limitless scenery of the Annapurna ranges.

You will explore the surrounding of Manang. Your guide will take you to some famous viewpoints and give a tour around the area. You will see many stone houses and prayer flags throughout the area. Give your body proper rest so that it can adjust to the thin air pressure. A day of rest will help you avoid the risks of altitude sickness.

Special Information

If you face any sort of difficulty in breathing or are experiencing symptoms of altitude sickness, immediately notify your guide. We have the arrangements of oxygen cylinders and breathing masks. Your guide will carry some medications to help relieve the symptoms. Do not consume alcoholic drinks as it increases the risks. Consume plenty of hot water, stay warm, and, most importantly, stay close to the group.

Pack your bags and arrange your equipment. Today you will move to the high camp of Chulu West. This trek is relatively harder as compared to previous days, but is gratifying once you complete it. You will walk along the main trail. Soon you will notice rapidly changing landforms as you continue elevating further. Continue along the steep path until you reach the strategic high camp point. This spot gives the best view of the Chulu West Peak. Set your camp here.

Relax for the rest of the day and let your body adapt to the harsh changing environment. You can roam around the camp if you like. Do not miss the sunset from up here. Get your cameras ready to capture the mystical sight of the sunlight over the mountains.

Today, you will walk up the rocky trail to reach Camp II. The path is slippery and difficult. The uneven landform makes it even more difficult. Do not rush as you might slip and hurt yourself. Keep your trekking poles ahead to use it as an extra limb for better balance. In around 4 to 5 hours, you will reach Camp II. You will set the camp here and rest for the night.

You will start your climb from Camp II at 1 am to 3 am. Starting at this hour will give you enough time to reach the peak and view the sunrise from up there. You will take the summit from the West side of the peak. This day is going to be tough on you, so be prepared. Gather your energy, keep your motivation high, and climb the peak. You will pass the glaciers following the slippery ice trails. You should have your crampons on to avoid slipping accidents.

You will reach a glacier that looks like stone steps. The view is fantastic from up here, but you still got a lot to see. Keep moving along the trail, and you will soon stand on top of the Chulu West. Breathe the mountain air and celebrate your achievement.

After making sure that you have caught the best views of the Annapurna region, slowly make your way down to the high camp. The trail is tricky, especially when descending, so be careful. You will make multiple stops in between to catch your breath. Chulu West High Camp (5100 meters) is your camping spot for tonight.

Special Information

The view from 6419 meters is amazing. You can see the Annapurna massif from up here while the clouds float far beneath you. The scenery is like a slice of heaven. But as mesmerizing as this setting can be, it is equally risky. Being at such height for a longer time dramatically develops the symptoms of altitude sickness. You shouldn’t spend your time here. Take a shot from every angle possible and climb down as soon as possible.

Rapid descent is not good and may cause health complications. So today, you will take a day off from trekking and spend your day at High Camp. Visit the surrounding area, play games, get to know the locals, and get proper rest.

Climb down from High Camp up to Letdar. You can have a snack break here. Further, the landform from Letdar continues to elevate. Leave the pastures of Chuli Leder and gradually hike to the ridge. You will get a clear view of Chulu West from this spot. From here onwards, descend till you reach the headwaters of Marshyangdi river.

You will cross a wooden bridge and get back on the trail that follows the bank of Jarsang Khola. Climb up the mountain path, and you will reach the scree slopes located above the river and finally to Phedi. You will spend the night here.

Your destination for today is Muktinath passing via Thorung La Pass (5416 meters). The trail becomes immediately steep as you leave Phedi. After hiking around 4 hours, the trail begins to flatten gradually. You will head towards the Kali Gandaki valley. This valley is surrounded by the purple and brown hills of Mustang.

You will also get a glimpse of Dhaulagiri standing tall above the valley. The vicinity here is amazing. You will stay overnight at Muktinath. While you are at this famous place, you will visit the Muktinath temple. This temple holds great religious importance for Hindus and Buddhists.

After a night stay at a symbolic site, you will head down to Kagbeni. You will walk for around 3 hours until you reach Kagbeni. It is a small yet beautiful place and is considered as the economic hub of this region. Leave Kagbeni and head down to the world’s deepest gorge – Kali Gandaki Gorge. Continue down the main trail that will lead you to the beautiful town of Jomsom. You will stay here for the night. You will get re-acquainted with the Tibetan culture here at Jomsom.

You will board a flight to Pokhara from Jomsom Airport. The flight offers a view of the mountain ranges and hills of the region. Once you get to Pokhara, you will take the tourist bus to your hotel. You can freshen up and have lunch. For the rest of the day, you will explore the City of Lakes.

There are a lot of places you can visit and lots of things you can do in Pokhara. Visit Tal Barahi, book a boat ride, walk or cycle around the Lakeside, visit the World Peace Pagoda, and Devi’s fall. You will enjoy your time here. The town comes alive during the night time. You can get yourself a drink at one of the pubs at Lakeside. Pokhara will surely relieve the stress of the tiring journey you went on.

Early in the morning, you will have breakfast and take a bus ride back to Kathmandu via Prithvi Highway. You will enjoy the same scenery as the transverse highway as before. If you like, we can book the flight back to Kathmandu from Pokhara. It will cost you an additional $120 per person.

After reaching Kathmandu, you can roam around the town. Visit the museums, historical places, Durbar Squares, or hang around the famous tourist hub – Thamel. You can buy souvenirs from this place to take back home.

The best time to climb Chulu West Peak is during Spring (March to May) and Autumn season (September to November). The weather remains calm and clear most of the time during these two seasons. Keep in mind that the weather in the mountain region is unpredictable. Wind speed and cloud position constantly keep changing.

Am I likely to get altitude sickness on Chulu West Peak climb?

Chulu West Peak measures to a height of 6419 meters. You will be spending 9 days above the height of 3000 meters. Hence, there are possibilities of getting altitude sickness while climbing Chulu West Peak. The air continues getting thinner as you continue your climb upwards.

However, we have technically designed our itinerary, so that it gives you enough time to acclimatize to the changing environment and air pressure. What kinds of climbing equipment should I carry for this expedition?

For a safe and successful climb, you need to pack the followings:
a pair of climbing boots,
down jacket,
down pants,
thermal wear,
windproof jacket,

balaclava, sun cap, gloves,
sleeping bag,
climbing helmet,
poles and,

How fit should I have to be to go on the Chulu East Peak Climbing?

Chulu West is a technically straightforward peak. Despite this, the trail is challenging and demands a good level of fitness in some parts. If you have prior experience of trekking or summiting, it will be an asset. This climb includes 5 to 7 hours of walk per day on a rugged and undulating trail. The trail keeps on rising each day until you reach the top. So to face the challenges of the mountain, you need to be in a good physical and mental state.

You don’t need to worry. We will guide you thoroughly on the types of physical exercises and techniques you need to learn. These techniques will help you on your journey. However, pursue some strength and stamina exercises before you book the trip.

How much money do I need per day during the climb?

Our standard package for Chulu West Peak climb is $2200 per person for 20 days. It excludes any personal cost that you might incur. You may expect an expense of $7 to 10 per meal in Kathmandu. Likewise, on the trail, $9 to 12 per day will be enough for basic personal expenses such as drinks and chocolates.
