Overview
If you are thriving for a short alpine trip that requires less technical skills, we would like to welcome you to the Chulu East Peak Climbing adventure. The Chulu East is one of the popular trekking trails in the Annapurna region besides the world-famous Annapurna Circuit, Annapurna Base Camp, or Manaslu circuit.
Chulu East Peak (6,584 meters) climb offers an iconic sight of the bold Mt. Annapurna (8,091m), Mt. Dhaulagiri (8167 m), and the snow-capped panorama of the Annapurna Range. This journey will take you through the diverse cultures and ethnicity of Nepal. Besides the unique demography, you will also get to experience varied ecosystems and ever-changing landscapes.
Although Chulu East is marked as a less technical peak, it can be particularly difficult for the new climbers. Hence, we recommend you get a hold on to your climbing gear such as climbing ropes, ice axes, crampons, and tying knots.
The climbing expedition to the Chulu East Peak starts at Besi Sahar. You will follow the most common trekking route that leads to many other destinations in the famous Annapurna circuit. The trail follows the Marsyangdi River valley and passes through a variety of landscapes and unique Gurung cultures. Moving along the rhododendron and pine forests, you will reach the upper valley.
Continuing up to Pisang, you will part your way off the Annapurna circuit, pass through an uninhabited region, and finally to Yak Kharka. After a few days of acclimatization, the path will continue to the Chulu East Base Camp. Another day of the climb, and you will find yourself at the height of 6,584 meters, enjoying the serene beauty of the Himalayas.
After a successful climb, the trail descends to Thorong La Pass at 5416 meters. Follow down to the spectacular pilgrimage site – Muktinath. Finally, trekking to Kagbeni and then to Jomsom, you catch a flight Pokhara.
The Best Season for Chulu East Peak Climbing is during spring (March to May), Autumn (September to November). During these periods, the weather remains clear, and the possible threats of high altitudes are reduced. Moreover, the days are longer, so that you get ample time to complete the climb of the day.

Is Chulu East Peak Climb Right For You?
- The weather can be unpredictable in the mountains, and affect your climb. Your trip may lengthen, shorten, or even halt due to unfavorable weather. Make sure you carefully plan the time of the year you wish to take on the climb as the scenery and conditions vary between seasons.
- For about a week or more, you will have to walk for around 5 to 7 hours, excluding the climb itself. So, make sure that you are ready for the challenge. Make yourself physically fit before you come here for the journey. Practicing some kind of climbing exercises prior to the expedition will be helpful.
- You will be scaling the Chulu East Peak that rests at the height of 6,584 meters. Although the peak is labeled as less technical climb, it can be somewhat challenging if you have no previous experience of summiting. So keep in check that you have a proper fitness level. Prior climbing experience before Chulu East Peak is a plus point.
- The expedition includes around 9 overnight stays over 3000 meters. There is a risk of developing Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), and you may notice shortness of breath and mild headache. Your guide will make sure to lead according to your natural pace, and walk slowly to let your body adjust to the thinning air.
- Our guides and Sherpas are well trained, are experienced, and carry first aid, including some emergency medicines, to help you in the time of difficulty. In extreme cases where you need emergency evacuation, we will rescue you via helicopter.
- Make sure that you are physically and physiologically capable of carrying out the climb before planning the trip. If you are unsure about your conditions, you need to seek medical advice before booking this expedition.

Safety and Precautions
When you are traveling to higher altitudes, there will be risks. You will most likely be at the risk of altitude sickness. So, we have mentioned a few tips that would help you prevent, or deal with altitude sickness:
Preventing Altitude Sickness
- Avoid direct flying to the high altitudes. Your body needs time to adapt to the changing altitude and environment. Don’t expose your body to the harsh environment directly.
- Take multiple days to hike in high altitude.
- Take rest every 600 to 800 meters as you go up.
- Drink enough water.
- Strictly avoid drinking alcohol and smoking.
Treating Altitude Sickness
- Immediately stop and rest where you are, once you start experiencing the symptoms of altitude sickness
- In the case of headache, take aspirin or ibuprofen.
- If you feel sick, take antihistamines like promethazine or trimeprazine
- Garlic and Sichuan pepper work great to prevent and treat altitude sickness
Medication
- Acetazolamide prevents and treats altitude sickness. It should be taken 24 – 48 hours before you start your hike,
- Ibuprofen and aspirin for headaches,
- Promethazine for nausea and vomiting.
