Overview

Mardi Himal Trek is the best-kept secret in the heart of the Annapurna region. Located eastwards of the classic ABC Trek, this adventure is one of the best short treks in the Himalayas of Nepal. The rugged trail of Mardi Himal is adorned with rhododendron forest, stone-built teahouses, diverse landscapes, high valleys, and majestic mountains.

Our 7-day itinerary for Mardi Himal Trek is an excellent choice for trekkers who are short on time but do not want to compromise the authentic Himalayan experience. You’ll get to savor the stunning sight of the mountains, including Annapurna Massif, Machhapuchhre, Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, and Lamjung Himal. The trail to Mardi Himal Base Camp is considerably less crowded than Annapurna Base Camp or Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek.

Your adventure begins with a 25-minute flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara. Furthermore, you’ll drive from Pokhara to Kande and start the trek to the Annapurna region’s most isolated trails. On the way to Mardi Himal Base Camp, you’ll walk past several famous villages, including Australian Base Camp, Pothana, Deurali, Forest Camp, and Badal Danda. Upon reaching the base camp, you’ll get to marvel at the closest possible view of Machhapuchhre Himal. In the distance, you’ll see massive ice fields and glaciers gliding from the wall of Annapurna.

At the elevation of 4,500 meters, Mardi Himal Base Camp marks as the highest elevation point of the trek. Moreover, this trek also treasures a few excellent destinations for stargazing. If you are keen on looking at the constellations, the High Camp, Low Camp, and Badal Danda are the ideal spots where you can do so. Is Mardi Himal Trek Right For You?

  • On average, on Mardi Himal Trek, you will have to regularly walk around five to six hours on the rugged trails of Annapurna. If you think daily walking for such a long hour is not a problem, you’ll be able to pull this through. However, make sure to put proper training and preparation before you pack your bags and head to the Himalayas. The most effective way to train for the trek is to go for short hikes around your city and engage in as many cardio-related activities like running, jogging, swimming, and cycling, at least a month before the trek.
  • Even though Mardi Himal Trek is a moderate trek in terms of difficulty, trekking in this region is no walk in the park. You will be hiking up to the elevation of 4,500 meters at Mardi Himal Base Camp and sleeping at the altitude of 3,540 meters for two nights. Not only that, but you will also have to walk past a few challenging sections on the upper reaches of the trek. Therefore, this demands both physical as well as mental preparedness. Prior trekking experience always helps when it comes to high altitude treks. However, this trek is achievable even for first-time trekkers with the right amount of training and preparation.
  • Keep in mind that you will be gaining approximately 300 to 800 meters altitude daily on this trek. Also, you will be starting this adventure at an altitude of 827 meters at Pokhara and walking up to 4,500 meters at Mardi Himal Base Camp. Such vast altitudinal variation poses a higher risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Make sure your body and mind can cope with such altitude gain.We highly recommend taking all the necessary precautions to reduce the chances of altitude sickness on the trek. Make sure you do not rush towards the destination! Always walk at the pace that feels most comfortable and keep yourself hydrated.
  • Remember, Mardi Himal Trek is not a luxurious holiday package. You will only stay in three-star hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara during the trip. While trekking in the mountains, the accommodation facilities are not as comfortable as it is in the city areas. You will be staying in small tea houses throughout the trek. The teahouse is a small lodging facility that only provides basic amenities. You will have rooms on a twin-share basis, a warm blanket, delicious food, WiFi, hot shower, and charging facilities. So, if you are one of those travelers who can adapt to such basic accommodation facilities, this trek will suit you quite well.

Do not forget, the weather in the mountains is unpredictable, especially at the higher altitude. You never know when you might have to encounter terrible weather while trekking in the Himalayas. On the upper reaches of Mardi Himal Trek, you might have to bear extreme cold weather, heavy rainfalls, or even snowy conditions in the worst case. So stay aware of such unforeseeable situations and be prepared to tackle them.

Moreover, wear enough layers to keep yourself warm and pack weather protection gear to keep you protected from the harsh conditions, even while trekking in spring or autumn.

Important Notes

  • Although Mardi Himal Trek is moderately difficult, there are a few extremely challenging sections you’ll have to live through on this trek. Therefore, it is mandatory to have proper travel insurance before heading to the Himalayas. We recommend buying insurance that covers all the necessary expenses, including helicopter evacuation, medical charges, accident, theft, and trip cancelation.
  • Bear in mind, in emergencies, your trekking guide will be the in-charge of the trek! He is fully liable to make necessary changes in plans and itinerary on the road if required. If the guide notices any health concerns or any unforeseeable situation, he will make the necessary changes or delays to the itinerary to ensure your safety and the trek’s success.
  • While trekking in the Himalayas, we recommend you carry a universal travel adapter to charge your camera, mobile phone, or any other electronic appliances. Usually, the teahouses in the Himalayas use type C plug for charging sockets. It may not be compatible with the adapter of your charger. In such a case, you may end up not being able to charge any of your devices throughout the trek.
  • As Mardi Himal Trek is moderately difficult, most trekkers tend to take it way too lightly and neglect it. Remember, you will be trekking up to 4,500 meters at Mardi Himal Base Camp, which means the risk of altitude sickness is relatively higher. Not only that but on the upper reaches of the trek, there are also a few extremely challenging sections. Therefore, this trek demands both mental as well as physical fitness. So, we highly advise you to engage in cardio-related exercises, such as swimming, running, biking, and jogging, at least a month prior to the trek.
  • Carry enough cash! Before heading to the mountains, we suggest you carry enough money to cover all your additional expenses for Mardi Himal Trek. You can find plenty of ATM lounges and credit card services around Kathmandu and Pokhara. However, once you begin the trek, you will not find any ATMs or credit card services during the trek. Therefore, make sure to dispense adequate cash in either Kathmandu or Pokhara.
  • Keep in mind that the teahouse in the upper regions of Mardi Himal does not have access to hydroelectricity. Most teahouses use solar energy as the only source of electricity. So, power in these regions may not be reliable all the time. Make sure to carry a portable charger as an alternative energy source to charge your electronic appliances, in case the power supply is not sufficient.

Upon reaching Kande, you’ll start the trek with a steep climb on the stone-paved staircase. Along the way, you’ll walk past numerous small villages, terraced fields, and dense forests. You will reach the small hamlet at the Australian Camp for after almost an hour of the strenuous climb from Kande. Once you walk past the village, you will once again enter the densely forested path. However, the trail becomes much steeper and narrow from the Forest Camp. As you continue climbing the strenuous uphill, the surrounding biodiversity gradually transforms into a ‘cloud forest’ with tree ferns, mosses, and lichens covering the area.

You’ll occasionally get a glimpse of Machhapuchhre, Annapurna South and Hiunchuli in the distance through the thick woodland. You’ll continue the walk through the forested trail until you reach the overnight destination at Low Camp.

Highlights

  • Walk under the shades of rhododendron, birch, and oak trees

You will see the sight of Modi Khola Valley spreading across the Annapurna Sanctuary if you glance towards the left.

You’ll then reach a small settlement of Badal Danda. Travelers regard this tiny settlement amid a dense forest as the most favorable spot to witness the Northern sight of Machhapuchhre. You’ll also get to relish the close-up view of Annapurna South, Hiuchuli, and Mardi Himal from here.

You’ll continue the trek further uphill through the forested trail from Badal Danda. After an hour or so, you’ll leave the trailing behind as the forested trail opens up into a grassy ridge. You continue the walk along the narrow path of the ridge, overlooking the marvelous sight of mountains up ahead, and the valleys down below until you reach High Camp.

This day marks as the most significant highlight of the Mardi Himal Trek. On this day, you will be hiking to the foothills of Mardi Himal. You’ll begin the adventure early at dawn and head off towards the Mardi Himal Upper View Point. The route from High Camp to the Upper View Point is dangerous and challenging as you’ll have to climb over a steep ridge.

You’ll reach the Upper Viewpoint of Mardi Himal right on time to witness the glorious sunrise over the mighty Machhapuchhre. In addition to that, the Annapurna South and Hiunchuli appear ever so close towards the left side.

After enjoying the epic sunrise over the Himalayas, you’ll continue the hike from the Upper View Point towards the Mardi Himal Base Camp. As you head further along the ridgeline, the route becomes narrower and steeper progressively until you reach the base camp.

From Mardi Himal Base Camp, the sight of Machhapuchhre Himal becomes much more impressive and substantial. The crest of Mardi Himal will be the only thing that separates you from the Southern face of the mountain. You’ll also see the vast ice fields and glaciers gliding from the wall of Annapurna Sanctuary in the distance.

After spending an amazing time at Mardi Himal Base Camp, you’ll retrace your route to High Camp via the Upper View Point. The trail to High Camp is steep and slippery. Therefore, we advise you to stay cautious with every step while descending from the Upper View Point towards High Camp.

Highlights

  • Witness the majestic sunrise over Machhapuchhre from Upper View Point
  • Stand at the foothills of Mardi Himal
  • Relish the close-up view of Annapurna and Hiunchuli
  • Savor at the ice fields and glaciers falling down the wall of Annapurna

Special Note

Remember, you will be reaching the Upper View Point of Mardi Himal for the sunrise view. So, you’ll need to wake up at dawn and hit the trail as early as possible. Therefore, we highly recommend you to carry a torch or a headlamp to keep track of the route in the dark. Additionally, you should also consider wearing a warm jacket, gloves, and a beanie to keep yourself warm in the morning. Before you leave the teahouse, make sure to fill your water bottle as you might need it on your way to the base camp.

Once you reach Lumre, you will catch a private transport arranged by Nepal Social Treks and drive back to Pokhara. It takes about two hours from Lumre to reach Pokhara. The roads are not well-paved, making the ride jolting and bumpy at times. On the way to Pokhara, you will get to enjoy the breathtaking view of mountains, hills, valleys, traditional villages, and terraced farms.

FAQs about Mardi Himal Trek

What is the accommodation like on the Mardi Himal Trek?

Mardi Himal Trek is a newly commenced teahouse trek in the heart of the Annapurna region. Apart from Kathmandu and Pokhara, where you’ll be staying in a 3-star hotel, the trek’s accommodation facilities will be relatively basic. Although Mardi Himal lies in one of Nepal’s most popular trekking regions, it still does not have well-facilitated teahouses, since the trek route is relatively new. However, the available teahouses are cozy, comfortable, well-managed, and hospitable.
Nonetheless, if you choose to experience Mardi Himal with Nepal Social Treks, we will ensure the most comfortable teahouse at every stop during the trek. Bear in mind, the teahouses in the mountain regions are not as luxurious as the fancy hotels around the cities. They only provide the basic amenities, such as rooms, blankets, food, toilets, WiFi, charging facilities, and hot showers.

Am I likely to suffer from Acute Mountain Sickness on this trek?

Usually, the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) begins once you start trekking above the elevation of 3,500 meters. On Mardi Himal Trek, the highest elevation point marks at 4,500 meters at Mardi Himal Base Camp. Likewise, the highest sleepover point of this trek marks at High Camp at an elevation of 3,540 meters. Therefore, the risk of AMS is considerably high on this trek.
Not everyone is likely to suffer from it! How the body reacts to the lack of oxygen and air pressure differs from one person to another. So, it is advisable to take all the necessary precautions to minimize the risk of altitude sickness. Make sure to keep your body hydrated and walk at your own pace. Besides, we design our Mardi Himal Trek itinerary with precise elevation gain each day to reduce the chances of high altitude sickness.

How's the drinking water on the trek? Is it safe to drink?

Your health and well-being will always be the number one priority of Nepal Social Treks. Therefore, we guarantee to provide you safe drinking water throughout the trek. Almost every teahouse in Mardi Himal delivers safe drinking water. Therefore, you do not have to worry about the quality of the water on the trek.

Simply carry a water bottle and fill the water in the teahouse before you start trekking every morning. However, we advise you to carry water purifiers or tablets to treat the water before drinking.
You can also buy bottled water in the teahouses and stores around the route. But, we do not recommend buying bottled water, as the bottled water only adds up the plastic waste in the trekking trail. Additionally, never drink water from a local stream, tap, or any other natural source.

How difficult is the Mardi Himal Trek?

The Mardi Himal Trek is a moderate difficulty trek. However, it is no walk in the park, and you should not take it lightly. Even though this trek is relatively easier than the Manaslu Circuit or the Everest Base Camp Trek, it has some extremely challenging sections and poses the threat of altitude sickness.
This trek is suitable for both beginners as well as experienced trekkers. It does not require any technical climbing or any prior trekking experience. However, it does require physical and mental preparedness. So, we recommend you to train and prepare well before heading to the Himalayas. Engage in as many cardio-oriented exercises, such as swimming, running, biking, and jogging, at least a month prior to the trek.

What kinds of insurance do I need for Mardi Himal trek?

Mardi Himal Trek is indeed relatively easier than the Everest Base Camp or Manaslu Circuit Trek. But that does not mean you should neglect this trek and take things lightly. Remember, you’ll be walking up to 4,500 meters above sea level at Mardi Himal Base Camp. So, this trek possesses a significant risk of high altitude sickness.
Not only that, but the upper reaches of the trek, especially the route towards the Upper View Point is extremely dangerous. You’ll have to walk through steep, narrow, and slippery vertical cliffs along the way.
So, it is mandatory to have travel insurance to go trekking in Mardi Himal. You should provide a copy of your travel insurance to Nepal Social Treks before heading to the mountain. Although it is moderately difficult, we recommend buying comprehensive travel insurance covering all the necessary expenses, as you never know what might go wrong in the mountains.
While buying travel insurance, always make sure that the policy covers extensive medical expenses, accidents, theft, trip cancelation, and, most importantly, helicopter evacuation fees at high elevation (up to 5,000 meters).

When is the best time to trek to Mardi Himal?

Mardi Himal Trek is a year-long trekking destination in the heart of the Himalayas. Yes, you can do this trek at any time of the year. Each season offers different experiences and opportunities while trekking in Mardi Himal.
Like all other treks in Nepal, the most suitable time to go trekking in Mardi Himal is during spring and autumn. At this time of the year, the sky tends to remain crystal clear and offers stunning views of the surrounding landscapes and mountains. In addition to that, the weather also remains moderate throughout the day, which is excellent for long-day hiking.
However, you can also do this trek during the Monsoon or Winter season. Remember, the trail during Monsoon can get wet and slippery. Therefore, we recommend you stay cautious and buy a pair of high-quality trekking shoes with grippy soles. Additionally, pack enough waterproof layers and raincoat to stay protected from the wet weather.
During the winter, the trail might be covered in thick snow, and the temperature might drop below zero in the upper reaches. So, make sure to keep yourself warm with enough layers and carry all the essential gear to stay protected from the harsh conditions.

What is the food like on the Mardi Himal Trek?

Remember, Mardi Himal Trek is a teahouse trek. Although the teahouses in Mardi Himal are quite basic, they serve both Nepali and western meals on their menu. While trekking in the Himalayas, Dal Bhat is the most popular food among the trekkers. However, we serve both Nepali as well as western cuisine on the trek.

Your health and well-being will always be the number one priority of Nepal Social Treks. Therefore, we guarantee you that all the meals served during the trek will be fresh, healthy, hygienic, nutritious, and delicious.

Here is a list of popular items on our menu:

Breakfast – Tea, Coffee, Hot Chocolates, Egg (Boiled, Fried, Omelets), Local Tsampa Porridge, Muesli, Pancakes, Tibetan Bread, French Toast (with Jam, Butter, and Honey), Oatmeal, Fruits, etc.

Dinner – Dal Bhat, Momo, Hot Soups, Thukpa, Sandwich, Pasta, Salads, Macaroni, Pizza, Noodles, Thenduk, Sherpa Stew, Desserts, Tea, Hot Chocolate, etc.

Do I need any specific training before trekking to Mardi Himal?

People often neglect training and preparation for Mardi Himal because it is only moderately difficult. However, we strictly recommend you to train and prepare well before heading to the Himalayas, whether you’re a novice traveler or an experienced trekker.
While most of the trek is relatively comfortable, you’ll have to walk through some challenging paths on the trek’s upper reaches. Therefore, it is handy to engage in as many cardio-related activities as possible, at least a month prior to the trek. Keep your body fit with activities like running, cycling, jogging, and swimming. We also advise you to hike to the nearby destinations around your home to get used to the rugged trails.
Not only that, but Mardi Himal Trek also possesses the threat of Acute Mountain Sickness. Therefore, you also need mental preparedness to complete this trek successfully. As a medium-grade trekking destination, Mardi Himal Trek is easily achievable with proper training and preparation, even for first-time trekkers.

Are there provisions for ATMs or credit cards on the trek?

You can only have access to ATM services in Kathmandu and Pokhara. There are plenty of ATM lounges and credit card services around the streets of Thamel in Kathmandu and around Lakeside in Pokhara. However, once you go beyond the city area and start trekking in the Himalayas, you will not have any access to any of these facilities.

Therefore, we recommend you dispense the necessary cash in Kathmandu, as far as possible. But, if you do not make it in Kathmandu, Pokhara is going to be your last resort to dispense the cash.
Besides, the teahouses in Mardi Himal do not accept foreign currencies. So, all the payments will require local rupees. If you only have foreign currency, make sure to exchange them into local cash before the trek. Like ATM services, you can also get plenty of exchange centers in Kathmandu and Pokhara.

Can I have a shower on the Mardi Himal trek?

Yes! You can get both cold as well as hot showers during Mardi Himal Trek. Almost every tea house and lodge in this region offers a shower facility. Normally, the hot showers of most tea houses are gas or solar-powered. But, some teahouses do not offer such facilities. In such a case, you might have to reconcile yourself with the bucket bath. The teahouses will charge you an additional amount, ranging from $2 to $5 for hot showers.
