Overview

Langtang Valley Trek is a relatively short yet classic trekking route in the heart of the Himalayas. Located northwards of Kathmandu valley, this trek is the most accessible and one of the best short treks in Nepal. The off-the-beaten-track of Langtang puts together a rhododendron forest, traditional teahouses, diverse landscapes, cascading waterfalls, high meadows, and breathtaking mountains.

Langtang Valley Trek is an excellent choice for hikers who do not have enough time but are willing to experience the ultimate experience of the Himalayas. On this trek, youโ€™ll get to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the mountains, including Langtang Lirung, Dorje Lakpa, Changbu, Langshisha Ri, and Yala Peak. Compared to treks like Annapurna Base Camp or Everest Base Camp, the route to Langtang Valley is significantly less crowded.

Protected as a National Park, Langtang valley is home to some of the most exotic wildlife and birds. Youโ€™ll get to encounter a few of these animals, including red panda, Himalayan Tahr musk deer, langur, and snow leopards. Likewise, in the forested trail of Langtang, youโ€™ll also get to see plenty of birds such as the Snow Patridge, white-winged redstart, and Himalayan monal.

Your journey to Langtang Valley Trek begins with a 7-hour drive from Kathmandu to a small town of Syabrubesi. From the bazaar of Syabrubesi, youโ€™ll start trekking to the stunning trail of the Langtang region. Walking past several Tamang villages, including Bamboo, Lama Hotel, Langtang Village, and Mundu, youโ€™ll finally make your way to Kyanjin Gompa. Once you reach Kyanjin Gompa, youโ€™ll get to marvel at the close glimpse of Langtang Lirung and other surrounding mountains. Kyanjin Gompa is also home to an ancient Buddhist monastery.

At 4,285 meters, Langshisha Kharka marks the highest elevation point of Langtang Trek. From here, youโ€™ll get to witness the marvelous glimpse of Langshisha Glacier. In addition to that, Langtang Valley Trek is also a cultural experience. It provides the opportunity to encounter the local culture, rustic lifestyle, and warm hospitality of Tamangs.

Langtang Valley Trek is a teahouse adventure. The teahouses and lodges of this region are pretty cozy and comfortable. They tend to provide all the necessary services, such as rooms, meals, hot showers, WiFi, and charging facilities. Our 10-days Langtang Valley Trek itinerary will suit both experienced trekkers and novice travelers willing to experience the authentic taste of trekking in Nepal. If you have a few additional days, you can also extend this trek as Langtang Gosainkunda Trek.

Is Langtang Valley Trek Right For You?

  • Langtang Valley Trek is considered an easy to moderate trek in terms of difficulty level. This trek is certainly no plain sailing. On this trek, youโ€™ll be walking up to 4,285 meters at Langshisha Kharka and sleeping above 3,500 meters for three nights. Therefore, this trek requires physical fitness as well as mental preparedness. It is always better to have a prior trekking experience when it comes to high altitude treks. But, with the right amount of training and preparation, this trek is achievable even for first-time trekkers.
  • Note that youโ€™ll have to regularly walk for about five to seven hours on the Langtang regionโ€™s rugged trails. If you think youโ€™re capable enough to walk for such long hours without any problems regularly, youโ€™ll be able to pull this through. Make sure to dedicate enough time and effort for training and preparation before packing your bags and heading to the mountain. It is advisable to engage in as many cardio-related exercises, such as running, cycling, jogging, and swimming, at least a month before the trek.
  • You will be gaining around 300 to 800 meters elevation each day on Langtang Valley Trek. You will be starting the trek at 1,503 meters at Syabrubesi and hiking up to 4,285 meters at Langshisha Kharka. Such massive variation in altitude possesses a potential threat of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).
We highly recommend taking all the necessary precautions on the trek to minimize the risk of high altitude sickness. Never rush towards the destinations while trekking at such high elevation! Always walk at your own pace and keep yourself hydrated, especially in the trekโ€™s upper reaches.
  • When it comes to the weather in the mountain region, it is simply unpredictable. Youโ€™ll never know when and where youโ€™re likely to encounter awful weather while trekking in the Himalayas. In the upper region of Langtang, you might have to go through extreme cold weather, heavy rainfalls, or even snowfalls in the worst case. Make sure to wear enough layers to keep your body warm. Also, carry weather protection gear to protect yourself from harsh weather conditions, even if youโ€™re trekking during the spring or autumn.
  • Langtang Valley Trek is not a luxurious holiday package! While trekking in the Himalayas, you will be accommodating in the basic teahouses that arenโ€™t likely to be as comfortable as the star hotels in the city. In general, the teahouse/lodge is a small accommodation facility that provides the basic amenities, such as twin rooms, blanket, food, WiFi, charging facilities, and hot showers. Therefore, if you think you can adapt to such a basic lifestyle for a little more than a week, this trek will suit you well.

Important Notes

  • Even though Langtang Valley Trek is considered a moderate trek in terms of difficulty, do not neglect it! Youโ€™ll be walking across a few landslide-prone areas during the trek. Make sure you have travel insurance before you catch a flight to the Himalayas. It is advisable that you buy a policy that covers all the necessary expenses, including helicopter evacuation, medical charges, accident, theft, and trip cancelation.
  • To charge your camera, mobile phone, or any other electronic appliances, it is always better to carry a universal travel adapter while trekking in the mountains. Generally, the teahouses use type C plug for charging socket, and not every adapter may be compatible with it.
  • Although the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is considerably less on Langtang Valley Trek, do not take the altitude way too lightly. Bear in mind–you will be hiking up to 4,285 meters at Langshisha Kharka. Such high altitude is enough to make you sick if you do not stay cautious about it. So, walk steadily and stay hydrated to reduce the risk of high altitude sickness.
  • Trekking to Langtang requires both physical fitness as well as mental strength. So, instead of directly heading to the Himalayas for the challenge, we highly suggest you engage in cardio-related exercises, such as swimming, running, biking, and jogging, at least a month prior to the trek. For mental preparedness, we advise you to go for a short hike around your hometown.
  • Carry enough cash! The last place youโ€™re likely to find an ATM on Langtang Valley Trek is at Syabrubesi. Given the circumstances, the service at Syabrubesi may not be reliable all the time. Therefore, we recommend you to dispense adequate cash in Kathmandu before the trek.
  • Also, the electricity in the Himalayas may not be reliable all the time. So, carry a portable or solar charger as a backup to charge your electronic appliances when the power supply is not sufficient.
