1. Namche to Syangboche

The first side trip on our list is Syangboche.

The trek to Syangboche is a bit steep, but the effort pays off when you reach the top of the hill and witness the breathtaking 360º scenery. From there, you can also see the entire Namche Bazaar below after a short climb.

Syangboche Airport, though not used for commercial flights, is an interesting sight overlooking Namche Bazaar.

And if you’ve hiked up to Everest View Point Hotel at 3,800m, you’ll enjoy even closer views of Mount Everest and its neighbouring peaks like Nuptse (7,855m), Everest (8,848m), Lhotse (8,516m), and Ama Dablam (6,812m).

2. Khunde and Khumjung, Two Namche Natives

Khumjung and Khunde, two neighboring villages surrounded by incredible natural beauty, are up next on our itinerary. Beautiful Sherpa communities with outstanding views of Mts. Ama Dablam, Everest, and Lhotse.

Climbing to Namche’s peak is the first step towards reaching Khumjung, one of the world’s most beautiful settlements. These villages are about a two-hour hike from Namche. You shouldn’t miss out on this trip, which is full of fascinating sights and fascinating people.

3. The Namchean Thame

Another excellent side trip from Namche is to Thame. It is the home to numerous well-known Sherpa mountaineers, comprising Tenzing Norgay Sherpa, Ang Rita Sherpa, known as “Snow Leopard” and Apa Sherpa, 21 times Everest summiteer.

This side trip leads you over a historic trading route that linked Khumbu and Tibet in the past.

One of the three oldest monasteries in Khumbu can be found at Thame, giving a historical depth to your journey.

4. Pangboche to the Amadablam Base Camp

If you’re searching for a less trekked route, taking the side trip to Amadablam Base Camp from Pangboche is a fantastic option. In about four hours, you can reach the foot of one of the Khumbu region’s most impressive peaks.

From Pangboche, you can enjoy the 360-degree surreal mountain views, including Mt. Lhotse-Nuptse massif, from the base camp.

5. Dingboche/Pheriche Chukung

Located in the northeast of Dingboche, the Chukhung Valley is a village that serves as an ideal spot for acclimatization before continuing on to Gorak Shep and Kala Pathar.

In addition to its acclimatization benefits, the trail through the Chukhung Valley offers a mesmerizing journey through expansive landscapes, fields enclosed by stone walls, and the picturesque Imja Khola Valley. As you venture further, you’ll encounter glacier moraines nestled amidst the towering peaks.

If you happen to trek during spring, the entire trail comes alive with vibrant rhododendrons, accompanied by the delightful scents of honeysuckle and cinquefoils.

6. Nangkartshang Peak

Another noteworthy side trip to consider is the ascent to Nangkartshang Peak.

Towering above Dingboche, this peak offers a commanding panoramic view of the Khumbu region, comprising Makalu, Ama Dablam, Chukhung and Numbur.

7. Going up Kala Patthar from Gorakshep

Kala Patthar, standing at 5,550 meters, is the best viewpoint along the Everest Base Camp Trek to see the beauty of Mount Everest, as you cannot catch a direct glimpse of Everest from the base camp itself.

I also recommend you wake up early to catch the sunrise from here.

From Kala Patthar, you can also see other beautiful peaks like Lingren, Khumbutse, Changtse, Lho La, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, and Kangtega. It’s an unforgettable experience.

8. Gumela and Rimishung Monastery from Phakding

Another captivating side trip option during the Everest Base Camp Trek is the journey to Gumela and Rimishung Monastery from the village of Phakding.

This side trip allows you to explore the region’s natural beauty while experiencing its rich spiritual heritage.

Gumela serves as the gateway to Rimishung Monastery. This sacred site holds deep cultural and religious significance for the local Sherpa community. Whereas, the monastery is nestled amidst the peaceful mountain backdrop and offers a serene ambiance, inviting visitors to soak in its spiritual atmosphere.

Conclusion

To sum it up, the Everest Base Camp Trek is more than just reaching the base of the world’s highest peak.

Along the way, you can explore spiritual places like Gumela and Rimishung Monastery, witness breathtaking views from Syangboche, and immerse yourself in the rich culture of Khumjung and Khunde.

These side trips let you appreciate nature’s beauty, connect with different cultures, and have personal moments of reflection. The Everest Base Camp Trek offers an unforgettable experience beyond the base camp itself.
