Mount Everest Expedition (8,848 M)

63 Days

Overview

To stand atop Everest is a dream for every alpinist. That’s understandable, as it is the highest point on earth at the altitude of 8848m (29029ft). Everest has attracted mountaineers from all over the world for decades and continues to do so. It’s glorifying history, and the alluring natural appeal is what makes these climbers dream so big, bigger than Everest itself.

After the first ascent in 1953, Everest was opened for mountaineers to climb. Out of the several attempts to conquer the peak, some made it while some of the top mountaineers couldn’t. Several expeditions turned into disasters while some made history.

Even after all these years, Everest stands tall and lures mountaineers with its beauty. If you’re one of those mountaineers, join us on our expedition to Everest. You can prepare yourself to immerse in the local culture and experience an adventure while being in safe hands. We believe expeditions are much more than climbing hence we have tailored a perfect package where you can explore more of Nepal and its culture with comfort.

The expedition is 63 days long with frequent climbing exercises across 4 camps and basecamp at different altitudes:

Camp I (6000m/20000ft): Your camp is set up at a flat area of mountain walls where there’s a perfect reflection of sunlight that heats up the ambiance.

Camp II (6400m/21000ft): The camp II is set up at the foot of the Lhotse wall at the altitude of 21000ft. At times, the wind here can be very strong and is powerful enough to destroy our tents. Otherwise, the weather is good. We will have a fixed full camping set up with a kitchen, dining tents, and kitchen crews.

Camp III (7100m/23294ft): This camp is set up adjoining Mount Lhotse wall. You will notice the decreased presence of oxygen on reaching Camp III. You can choose to use oxygen cylinders in case you need one.

Camp IV (8000m/ 26300ft): This is the final camp set up about 848m below the summit. Here the wind is ferocious. This is the final, dangerous, and challenging part of the expedition.

Short History of Everest Expedition

Several attempts were made starting from Britishers in the 1920s to scale Everest. However it was only in 1953, Sir Edmund Hilary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa scaled Everest for the first time using the southeast ridge. Prior to that multiple unsuccessful attempts were made from the northside. There are two main routes leading to the summit of Everest. One is the standard route from southeast Nepal, while the other is from the north in Tibet.

Technically Everest climbing is not that tough, however, other challenges like weather and wind, altitude sickness, and unpredictable avalanches make it a challenging experience. You need experience and expertise in mountaineering to scale Everest. If you have some previous experience of climbing and a strong willingness, you can join us on this journey with experts who have years of experience of extreme altitude mountaineering.

Is Mount Everest Expedition Right For You?

  • The Everest expedition takes you to the highest point on earth. So, to join the trip, you must be aware of what you’re stepping into.
  • For this expedition, the permit from the Nepal Government is available only if you have prior climbing experience in Nepal at any of 6000+M peaks. Also, you will need to submit a health report stating that your health condition is good enough.
  • The budget is another significant aspect of this expedition. The permit alone costs $11000, while the overall cost might range to something around $ 30000-$45000. Many climbers claim collecting the budget is as hard as climbing itself.
  • Besides physical strength, the Everest expedition also demands mental toughness. The ability to make the right decision at the right time and work as a team is essential for the success of the expedition.
  • During the expedition, for the first few days, you’ll be staying in well-facilitated hotels. But once you reach the base camp, the accommodation facilities are pretty basic. You’ll be staying in tents and eating regular/basic food for around 2 months. So, be prepared for that.

Ultimate Destination: Mount Everest (8848 M)

After properly acclimatizing at the base camp, we begin our expedition slowly and steadily to the top of Everest from this day. Getting to the top of the world takes a lot of hard work, determination, and practice. Starting from this day, you will be training, learning, and preparing yourself for the climb of your life.

You will be ascending and descending to and from different camps at different altitudes. In general, there are 4 camps besides base camp. The ascending and descending process helps you acclimatize properly with the surreal altitude. It is a complete test of your physical, mental, and emotional strength.

One of the challenging parts of the Everest expedition is climbing the Khumbu Icefall. While on this icefall, large crevasses can open up in no time with little or no warning. Huge ice blocks of ice break out from the glacier from time to time. These blocks can be anywhere from the size of a car to the size of a multi-storeyed building. That is why climbers take on this icefall early in the morning as the sun’s heat during the day can cause the icefall to break down.

Throughout the climb, your safety will be the priority as you will have world-class professionals to guide you and help you in any situation. Everest summiteers sherpas will help you get to the top just like they do.

Talking about the views, we can say there’s nothing in the world like the view from the top of Everest. All other 8000 meter peaks surrounding Everest make you realize the grandeur of this mighty peak. Once you’re the top, the feeling of being at the top of the world takes over everything else and gives you an ultimate feeling of achievement and satisfaction.

On the 56th-57th day, you will be down at the base camp after a successful ascent of the world’s highest peak. With a tired body and heart full of joy, you finally get to rest properly in the well-managed camps at the base camp. You can celebrate the success with the team.

Highlights

  • Stand up at the top of the world’s highest mountains, Mt. Everest.
  • Work with the best sherpas and mountain guides.
  • Getting yourself acclimatized by ascending and descending between the camps.
  • Safely ascend and get back to the basecamp.
  • Celebrate your success at Everest base camp.

Special information

Before you begin the actual climbing, a small ritual/”puja” is performed at the base camp. Following the local Sherpa culture, this tradition is performed to ensure the safety of everyone and please the mountain god. It is performed by the local lama with other sherpas involved in the team.

Altitude: 4910m

Once the expedition is complete, get along with your team and clean up your mess in the base camp before leaving. We as a company are concerned about keeping our mountains free of pollutants. You along with the team will be packing to head home so you will be busy packing in the morning.

On the same day, you will be trekking back to Lobuche. This time it is a lot easier, and trekking above 4000 meters feels like a privilege. You will walk the same trail through rocky moraine and streams flowing by the sides. After a couple of hours we reach Gorakshep which our rest and lunch spot. Walk further for 4-5 hours and you’ll be in Lobuche.

Highlights

  • Clean up the base camp area
  • Enjoying the pleasing sound of streams flowing and wind blowing while you walk through high altitude rocky moraines.

FAQs about Mount Everest Expedition

What are the prerequisites for the Everest expedition?

Everest expedition is the ultimate expedition for all climbers. To join in on this experience of a lifetime, you’ll need to have some previous experience of climbing some 6000-7000 m peaks in Nepal. Only then you’re eligible for the permit. Besides that, you also need to submit a certificate of good health and physical fitness and be accompanied by a professional mountain guide.

How much does it cost for the Everest expedition?

To be honest, climbing Everest costs quite a lot. Simply, acquiring the permit from the Nepalese government costs around $11000. Besides that, there are many miscellaneous costs associated with a climb. So on average, climbing with a Western agency can cost you anywhere around $45000-$70000, including everything. Whereas, if you choose to climb with a Nepalese agency it can cost anywhere around $30000-$45000

Which route will we use for the expedition?

We at Nepal Social Treks are concerned about providing a standard service for all. So, we choose to climb from Southern Col, which is the easiest route to the top of Everest as called by many mountaineers. After it was first discovered by Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary in 1953, it has since been the standard route for climbing Everest.

What are the food and accomodation facilities like?

During the first few days, you will be staying at a 3-star/5-star and eating food just like your home, although you’re away from home. While on the trek to base camp, you will need to adjust in twin-sharing rooms as you go higher. At the basecamp, there are well-facilitated tents where our sherpas cook the best food for you. Rather than freeze-dried food, we choose MRE’s(Meals Ready-to-Eat). Food like pizza, bacon, eggs, pasta, etc. is available.

What equipment do I need for the Everest expedition?

Once you register your trip with us, we provide you with an extensive list of equipment you need to get for the expedition. You must follow the list strictly. In case you want a few extra personal stuff, you may bring that too. Remember, the weight limit should be around 40 kgs. So, if the weight limit is exceeded you will need to pay extra on flight, you can bring anything that helps you make base camp your home.

How long does it take to climb Mt Everest?

All in all, the whole trip from Kathmandu takes about 63 days, including 11 days of getting to Everest Base Camp, 46 days of climbing, and 1 day for clean up. It is one of the longest climbing trips that will test your physical and mental strength to its core.

Do we use oxygen cylinders?

Yes, oxygen cylinders are an essential part of the expedition. NST encourages all of its clients to use an oxygen cylinder while climbing, which will help you perform better. Climbers have reported increased energy levels, ease in breathing, better health by the end of the expedition, and also said they were able to better enjoy their time at the top with the oxygen cylinder on.

What about health emergencies?

For an Everest expedition, you are asked to submit your health report before you’re granted a permit. However, in case of emergencies, we suggest you get an insurance policy that covers the cost of a rescue. Nonetheless, we have a team of the experienced medical staff at the base camp.
