Shisapangma means "the big grassy field" in Tibetan. It is the only 8000 meter peak that lies wholly within Tibet's borders. For a very long time it was relatively unknown as it is mostly hidden from Nepal by the Jugal Himal Mountain Range. The first summit attempt was made in 1964 by a Chinese expedition group on the north side of the mountain. Today Shisapangma is one of the easiest 8000-meter peaks to visit. It towers impressively near Nyalam Thong-La Pass.
Groups meet in Kathmandu initially where a few days are spent in preparation before commencing the journey along the Kathmandu-Lhasa Highway to Nyalam the first major settlement in Tibet (3750 m). We spend two nights camping here to acclimatize with day hikes to higher altitudes. We then proceed along the Friendship Highway and cross the high Lablung-La Pass (5070 m). We soon find ourselves at the Shisapangma Base Camp (BC).
The following day is spent in preparation for the climb to come. We will take a few excursion around the Base Camp before heading to the Advanced Base Camp (ABC). We then spend 27 days attempting the summit. After cleaning up the Base Camps, we spend one night at the border town of Zhang-Mu before our return to Kathmandu.
