The very first Mani-Rimdi Festival, which takes place in monastery of Tengboche, seems to have taken place sometime in the year of 1930. This festival first originated from the Rongbuck Monastery in Tibet, which is the highest monastery in the world. Mani-Rimdi is a prayer ceremony where monks put on mask to represent the divine figure to perform religious ritual dances. The devotees in the festival pour from all over the Everest region. A huge number of crowds gather to receive the blessing of good fortune and good health from the head Lama. In their visit Devotees make contribution of corn and grain to the monk’s community. The time of Mani-Rimdi Festival and end of crop harvesting time in the Everest region coincides. Normally Mani-Rimdi Festival takes place at the month of November (full moon, date is not fixed and can change according to the Tibetan calendar.), but since the date is fixed according to the Tibetan calendar, one is advised to make travel arrangement for this trip based on the Tibetan calendar. Mani-Rimdi Festival is the only social event in the Everest region what attracts such a huge number of people at a place.
