After remaining closed for almost 3-4 decades and strictly restricted from 1958 when Tibet was engulfed by china, Dolpo region was partially opened for trekking and tourism in 1989. Lying in the west of the Kali Gandaki River, Dolpo is located inside the Shey Phoksundo National park in the mid-western region of Nepal, right between the land surrounded by Mt. Dhaulagiri and high plateaus of Tibet where the cold Shey Phoksundo Lake lies. Shey Phoksundo Lake is the coldest and the deepest lake in Nepal.
